Perinatal Nurses
The Perinatal Department provides a wide range of comprehensive acute
and critical care primarily to females of childbearing age and to newborns.
We provide care to patients at all stages of pregnancy, delivery and immediate
postpartum recovery, as well as to females with gynecological complications.
The department also runs a Regional Neonatal Transport Service. The department
operates 24-hours/day, seven days/week. All units within the department
adhere to AWHONN recommended guidelines for care.
The following is a breakdown of some of the units within the department.
Family Birth Center (20 LDRs, 5 ORs)
Level III regional Perinatal Referral Center, caring for low to high-risk patients.
4K OB ICU/High Risk and Recovery Unit (5 beds)
The staff on this unit provides care to women in the antepartum or postpartum
period who need intensive/invasive monitoring, observation and care not normally
provided in the LDR area. Post-operative cesarean section and tubal ligation
recovery are also provided on this unit. The staff on this unit is uniquely
qualified to provide obstetrics and intensive care to their patients.
4A Mother Baby (41 beds)
Nursing care on this unit is provided with a family centered approach in private
patient rooms. This unit provides care to stable postpartum and stable newborn
patients.
5L Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Level III ICU.
5K Intermediate Care Unit
Provides step-down care for newborns, while the majority of admissions are
from the NICU. This unit also accepts admissions directly from the mother /baby
unit and from the family birth center.
4B Antepartum/Gynecology (35 beds)
By far the most diverse patient population, which appeals to nurses who like
variety. The nurses on this unit provide care to stable antepartum patients with
obstetrical or medical complications but who are not contracting regularly,
complicated or high acuity postpartum patients.
4K Women's Urgent Care Center (WUCC).
The WUCC is a level I emergent care center which provides care to approximately
17,500 females annually 24-hours/day, 7-days/week. The unit cares for adolescent,
adult and geriatric female patients. The major diagnostic categories of patients
served are patients presenting with obstetrical and gynecological complications,
life-threatening illnesses, trauma, neglect and/or abuse.
Angel II Neonatal Transport
Transport team for the Regional Perinatal Center. Coverage area includes 40
North Georgia counties as well as hospitals in the metro Atlanta area. The nurse-led
team consists of a bachelor's prepared RN with 3 or more years of level II NICU
experience, a registered respiratory therapist and an EMT. This team has transported
approximately 650 critically ill newborns each year since its inception in 1976.
